School Readiness Checklist: Is Your Child Ready for PP1?

Is your child ready for Pre-Primary 1 (PP1)? School readiness isn't just about academic skills – it encompasses social, emotional, and physical development too. Use this checklist to assess your child's preparedness.

Academic Readiness

Your child should be able to:

  • Recognize letters of the alphabet
  • Count to at least 20
  • Recognize basic shapes and colors
  • Hold a pencil correctly
  • Write their name
  • Follow multi-step instructions

Social Readiness

Social skills to look for:

  • Plays cooperatively with other children
  • Shares toys and takes turns
  • Can work in small groups
  • Respects teachers and rules
  • Can separate from parents comfortably

Emotional Readiness

Emotional indicators:

  • Manages frustration appropriately
  • Expresses feelings verbally
  • Shows curiosity about learning
  • Can focus on tasks for 10-15 minutes
  • Adapts to new situations

Physical Readiness

Physical skills needed:

  • Uses scissors safely
  • Can button and unbutton clothing
